You may need to make sure that your "Recording Device" (or Default DirectSound input device) is set to "microphone". Being able to hear yourself when blow into the mic just means your microphone is working. It may depend upon what mixer/sound controls you have installed, but you should get into your mixer/sound controls and find the "Recording" settings. In there, you need to select the microphone as the recording device.
Btw, you can "mute" the microphone in the playback mixer, so you don't hear yourself talk, but the mic will still work for "Recording".
